Twitter to Censor Tweets

In a move that is likely to be met by claims of censorship, online social media community Twitter is to start censoring tweets. It has adapted the technology it uses so that it is able to censor tweets on a country-to-country basis. Basically when a tweet is censored it will be unavailable in the country where it is censored but users in other countries will still be able to view the tweet. Upon removal the user will receive a censorship notice. This move is seen as a way for Twitter to expand its reach in countries like China. The Chinese are well known for the censorship of the web particularly with what it deems to be anti-government sites & blogs. But is this move good for its users? Is this just th first step to removing our freedom of speech? I for one am not in favour of this kind of censorship as once you censor certain countries the internet and twitter no longer becomes a place where you can air your views and it becomes a place where freedom of speech is limited.

  1. WOW!! This sure is interesting!! I am not at all surprised that this would appeal to China. I've been there before and have a dear friend who's there. I guess to each country their own, but as for the US, I find it disheartening!! Thanks for sharing this!
